How to Tell If You’re Talking to an AI system (and Not Get Fooled)

Written by Steve Preston | Partner at Eden Rose USA

AI is getting scary good at sounding human. Whether you’re chatting online, reading comments, or getting a customer service reply, it’s harder than ever to know who’s (or what’s) on the other side.

So how can you tell if you’re talking to a person or a bot? Here are a few simple tricks.

Ask the Right Questions

Bots are smart but they don’t have lives, feelings, or memories. Ask things that require human experience:

  1. “What did you do last weekend?”
  2. “Tell me about a time you failed and what did you learn from the experience.”
  3. “What’s your earliest childhood memory?”

Bots might give vague or weirdly perfect answers. Real people tend to share emotion, messiness, or details that don’t sound scripted.

Watch for These Signs:

Too perfect? Replies are typo free, always polite, and come instantly at any hour.

No depth? Answers sound polished but flat, with no real emotion or opinion.

Overly formal? Conversations feel like essays, not chats.

Avoids specifics? AI tends to stay general or dodge tough questions.

How to Be Sure:

Reverse image search profile pics AI accounts often use fake or stock photos.  So double check the images – see if they appear elsewhere online.

Use AI detectors for written content (like GPTZero or others).

Check posting behaviorhundreds of posts a day, no personal content? Probably a bot.

Don’t Get Caught Out

  • Double-check anything important (especially advice).
  • Don’t overshare with strangers or bots.
  • Be cautious of accounts that feel too smooth to be real.

Bottom Line

AI is great at pretending, but it still can’t fake being human all the way.  Ask real questions, look for real emotion, and trust your instincts. If something feels off, it probably is.
